My Films: Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction
Other Films: Kill bill
Comparison Films: The Usual Suspects

What is an Auteur:
is an Author who has a consistent style or look to their body of work. We will now look at some of the features of Tarantino to see if he is arguably an auteur.

What Makes HIm an Auteur:
Tarantino has made a series of films, that allot of people would say are "timeless classics". His Looney and Crazy style of films. The self taught writer-director uses intertextulity and expresses his psychotic love of violence,

"Quentin Tarantino is one of the most respected and recognized directors of contemporary cinema. There is a heated debate around Tarantino being an auteur or the ultimate postmodern pastiche rip-off (Groth, 1995; Cook and Bernik, 1999). His supporters praise him for
originality and naturalistic dialogue whilst those who dislike his work, accuse him of making trash popular (Denby, 2013)."

Sound Notes.

Sound notes:

-Diagetic: Sound that is part of the film world I.e. Dialogue and any ambient sounds you would expect to hear in that setting, for example hearing the engine running in a car

-Non Diagetic: Not recognised as being part of the film industry

-Contrapuntle (sound doesn't fit the image)

-Sound bridges: Audio that continues through two or more pieces of footage but maintains flow

-Generic conventions I.e. The expectation of laughing at a comedy is a generic convention

-Inigma codes-puzzles(something that has to be solved)

The Shining

The Shining.

-Ostensibly a haunted house story, it manages to traverse a complex world of incipient madness, spectral murder and supernatural visions... and also makes you jump.

-The first time I saw Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, I had to turn it off during three key moments... Perhaps this time, I prayed, it would seem almost comically silly. Yeah, not so much.

-The Shining met the fate of several other Stanley Kubrick films when it came out; most viewers did not like it, so they rejected it. Most importantly, they did not understand it in any way which allowed them to deal with it constructively.

Evaluation of Performances:

I thought the acting by Jack Nicholson was great, facial expressions and the feel of the character are really played upon. Danny is also like that, for someone young as well, he's really convincing to the audience and gave me quite a weird feeling, how ever, i didn't find Shelley Duvall's acting very convincing at all. She's starring in the film, so she's doing something right. But she's just not very convincing and abit of a dull actor. The way she uses the baseball bat when Jack is approaching her on the stairs, it's like she'd been told to swing it about, and thats literally all she's doing, she's just swinging it about every like 3 seconds, when really, if that was the real scenario i think you'd do it very differently. She just didnt do it for me. As a family they had chemistry, if that makes sense? They suit eachother for the film and over all I thought they was great. Also i'd never seen the film, so glad i did. was absolutely awesome.

Se7en

Seven- scene 17 to 52 mins

It was set in an apartment block. This is important as it was in low key and used props such as lots of air fresheners as it generates connotations of fear and confusion.
The main characters were dressed in police uniform to give a sense of authority.
Their facial expressions were of caution and apprehension.
The police people were looking at the door which creates tension, and then when opened they were looking at the off screen space. The camera zoomed in at the letter box which is the depth of focus. The lighting was low key, very dull and dark which creates more tension as you don’t know what will appear or happen next.
A specific camera shot would be the point of view when they knock down the flat door, this is interesting because it shows what the first persons view is.
A specific camera angle is the low angle looking up at the stairs at the beginning of the scene, this is interesting at you can see the officers running up the steep stairs of the apartment.
A specific camera movement would be tracking when the camera moved back when they opened the bedroom door, this shows their shock/suspicion.
The color wash is dark and creates a dull feel. The police officers enter the frame at both sides.
